Tool marks tell us a lot about ancient woodworking. Can the latest digital methods help to identify tool marks? A current project uses Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) models of archaeological wood and modern wood samples to create a database of tool marks. Tool mark entries have been created for Mesolithic and Medieval tools, while Bronze Age tools will be added in the spring. The findings will be featured in an Internet Archaeology article and the tool marks database will be available for researchers on MaritimeArchaeology.com.
