Huckberry has published a story I wrote about my friend and colleague Tony Koulouriotis. Tony is a former sponge diver and currently working with us to locate shipwrecks. The article tells of what it was like to be a sponge diver, a incredibly challenging life that shaped an island’s culture for generations. Thanks to Zach, Liv, and Justus at Huckberry for publishing the story.
Check out the story here.
“In the summer, the search for shipwrecks will continue. And in the evenings, we’ll listen to stories about the old days when sponges lined divers’ pockets with gold, the measure of a man was how deep he dove, and women put on mourning frocks when the sponge boats appeared on the horizon.”
